Episode 6

     I’ve always been optimistic, even as a little seed. I could always feel that great things were inside of me. As I grew, so did all my family around me. We didn’t look exactly the same at first, but who does?

     The bigger we grew, the more we joked together about who would be the BIGGEST and BESTblueberry. I could feel inside that I was going to be GIANT! Much bigger than my siblings.

     Then it happened! One warm day, with an especially warm wind, we started to fruit! Everyone was so excited. It was the moment we all were waiting for!

     We all started small. Then we started to grow! While some stopped growing and turning blue, some kept growing.

     More and more AND MORE of my siblings stopped growing and started turning blue! It looked like all the berries were done, except me! I kept growing!

     AND GROWING! I had joked that I would be the biggest berry, but now I was… and I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would.

     Then my colour started coming in. As if being the biggest berry in the bush wasn’t enough, now I was turning red! I hoped it was just an odd shade of blue… But no. Just red.

     My siblings laughed at me. While everyone else was getting picked, all I was, was picked over. 

     I was the only red berry in a bush full of little blue ones. I tried to stay optimistic, but it was hard. I was different and no one wanted me.

     Days and days passed. I said goodbye to so many of my siblings. Just waiting for my turn to be picked … or to spoil.

     That’s when I heard it! “Mommy! Mommy! Look! It’s a funny red berry!” A little squeal rang out. My hopes were up!

     I heard the little girl’s mother tell her I was a cherry. Finally, things made more sense! “Oh Mommy, can I have it? Please?!” I had never been begged for! Now my hopes were sky high!

     Words cannot describe how blissful it was when I felt her pick me. I wasn’t a weird blueberry. I was a perfect cherry all along!
